Person County Public Library announces events

The Person County Public Library is offering two opportunities for residents, including a digital magazine collection, a “maker” event and a visit from a NASA engineer featured in the book Hidden Figures.

The Person Early College Science Club is hosting Maker Saturday on Sept. 22 at the library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Science and technology activity stations will be set up for families to learn, build and tinker.

The drop-in program is perfect for families with children aged five years and older.

The event will be followed by a 2p.m. visit with Dr. Christine M. Darden, a NASA engineer featured in the book Hidden Figures, which is the featured book of the 2018 Person County Community Read.

The community read is supported by the Library Services and Technology Act’s Community Connections Grant, which is made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, as administered by the State Library of North Carolina.

The library is now lending free digital magazines to library cardholders for a two-week checkout period.

The new collection features current issues of more than 50 popular magazines, including Newsweek; O, The Oprah Magazine; Redbook; Popular Science; Car and Driver; and American Girl Magazine.

Digital magazines are available via the library’s free Libby app or at www.e-inc. overdrive.com.

The collection joins the library’s digital collection of over 25,000 eBooks, audiobooks and videos. Borrowing is free, and items never have overdue fees.
