Spring 2018 Rock staff

NILA ALLEN

Greetings fellow peers and whomever may be reading. I am an 18-yearold senior who’s trying to make it somewhere in life. I have an amazing 2-year-old baby girl named Jayla Rae. I love to sing and have been doing so since the age of three. I enjoy writing and I know this class will help me decide to take my writing to the next level.

BRITNEY ANNAS

I’m a 17-year-old senior at Person High School. I started my high school career taking creative writing and am excited to end it with journalism. I am considered a very quiet and shy person, but I am honestly okay with that, because I get all my talking out on pieces of paper. My best friend is my beloved pitbull, who I spend almost all of my time with. I am excited to finish high school, continue to Piedmont Community College, and then transfer to a university and become a Spanish translator or a writer.

KYLIE BLACKWELL

I am a 16-year-old senior at Person High School who is very outgoing and loves to talk to people. I love to play volleyball and I also do a lot of photography. Although I haven’t decided what I want to do once I get out of college, I am still hard working and I plan on doing the best I can in everything I do.

SARAH BOONE

Hello Person County. I am a junior at Person High School. Writing for The Rock page in The Courier- Times has been a joy of mine in the past and I am looking forward to it this semester. I play for the Person High School volleyball team and I am a member of Key Club. Outside of school, I play for NC Elite Volleyball Club.

BEYOUNCE BROOKS

I am 17 years old and I am a junior at Person high school. I absolutely love to write, although I am more interested in writing music which is funny because of my name. I have never been in a journalism class before, but I believe I will love it. I enjoy playing volleyball, dancing and singing from time to time. After graduation I plan to attend Johns Hopkins or Duke University.

OCTAVIA CLAYTON

I attend Person High School as a junior. I am new to writing, but it is something I like doing.

I have considered becoming an author one day and that’s one reason I decided to take journalism. My books will most likely involve monkeys. I also dream of attending a specific college, N.C. State University.

I believe improving my writing will benefit me in college, throughout life, and my future career, which I hope will be in the Central Intelligence Agency.

KIMAYA CRAWLEY

I’m not really good at first impressions, but let’s see how this goes. I love to cook and especially eat, I love animals, and although I love writing, I never thought about taking a journalism class until I realized it was offered at Person High School. My educational goals are to graduate with a GPA of at least 3.7, attend UNCW and become a marine biologist. My mother was once a member of the PHS track team, so I have decided to followed in her footsteps by participating on the team this year just as I did last year.

MAKIYA CRUTCHFIELD

I am an 18-year-old senior at Person High School. I love going shopping — you could say I have a shopping addiction. I am on the Person High School varsity cheer squad and have been cheering ever since I was a little girl. When I graduate I would like to attend Winston-Salem State University or Concord University to major in the medical field as a medical assistant or a cardiologist. I enjoy helping and taking care of others.

COURTNEY DAVIS

Seventeen years and I still cannot think of a single way to begin describing myself, but I will try. I am a third year Rock staff member, and I am extremely excited to be taking this course again. As a high school junior, I am still trying to find where I fit in this perplexing world. I am a member of Person High School’s Students for Equality (SFE) and Teen Democrats. I am also a member of the cross country and track teams. For 13 years, I have dedicated my life to dance at Christi’s Dance Center. Dance, along with music and writing, help me express myself when I am feeling lost.

BRITTANY FARMAN

I am a 17-year-old senior at Person High School, and this is my second year writing for the Rock Page. When asked to describe myself, I hesitate at first, but eventually the words talkative and bubbly come to mind. I am a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Future Farmers of America, and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. I have one sister, Allie, who I love very much. At age five, I developed a love for dance and have been dancing at Christi’s Dance Center ever since.

EYANNA FEATHERSTON

I am Eyanna Featherston. I’m 18-years-old and a senior at Person High School. Ever since I was 8-years old, writing has always been my number-one passion. My goal is to become a successful writer, so after I graduate high school, I plan on going to college and majoring in English. This is my second year taking journalism. Aside from writing, my other big interest is traveling. I would love to one day travel to a different country.

OLIVIA GENTRY

I am a junior and this is my first year at Person High School. I have grown up in a big family — on my dad’s side, I have 10 cousins and the family is constantly growing. I used to play soccer, but because of constant injuries, I had to stop. I still love the sport and wish I could be out there. I’ve never taken journalism before because my last school didn’t provide it, so I was excited when I found out I was able to take it; being able to express your opinion in any way you want is something I just love. Because I am so new to the school, I am coming in here with no idea of what to expect and having no idea where I fit in. Everything is so different, because at my old school there were only 700 students and I’m now coming into a school where that is doubled.

ALEXIS GIBBS

I am a sophomore at Person High School and I tend to stay to myself. I only talk to the people I know and am completely comfortable around. I am apart of JROTC staff. JROTC takes all my time - I’m busy with fundraisers, parades, and other leadership skills. JROTC staff is full of cadets that make sure JROTC stays true to their reputation. The goal of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. Staff also make sure that our fellow cadets are okay and that we are positive role models and leaders for our fellow cadets to look up to. I am a returning Rock staff member.

NICHOLAS HARRIS

This is my fourth year attending Person High School but my first time taking Mrs Flowers’ journalism class. I chose the option to take this class for gaining knowledge about writing, editing, and exposure to the media world. I

I’ve played Rocket football under coaches Rob Rogers and David Kleine. My hobbies include eating, playing Madden NFL and spending countless hours on my phone. I plan to attend A&T University where I will earn my bachelor’s degree in mass communications. With the love and support from God, my family, friends and teachers, I know anything is possible. My number goal in life is, “To be successful and make others successful as well in the process.

TIARA JEFFERS

I am a sophomore at Person High School. I plan on becoming a math teacher because I love challenging my mind. My mom is my closest friend, and she inspires me to be better everyday. I never thought about writing until I was in 10th-grade English. Likewise, I never thought about taking journalism and only recently realized that PHS offered a journalism class. In the next two years, I plan to graduate high school and seek a degree in mathematics at North Carolina A&T.

PAYTON KRAUSE

First off, I must tell you about the most important part of my life which is dance. I have been dancing since I was 5-years old and currently attend Fabulous Feet Dance Academy everyday of the week and happen to be lucky enough to have Heather Sanford as my dance teacher. I am also a captain of the Person High School Drill Team, so add practices and games onto my schedule and let’s just say I have a very supportive mom who is always willing to drive me to and from practice, competitions, and dance classes. This is my sixth time writing for the Rock page and I love writing almost as much as I love to dance and eat. I like science and the study of the weather. I’ve always liked storms and the idea of tracking and chasing them, and I think I would like to pursue a career in that field later on in life.

I am a senior at PHS. After high school, I hope to attend college at either Meredith College or North Carolina State University and major in meteorology and/or dance.

UNIQUE LEAKE

I am a senior at Person High School who enjoys cooking, reading and walking the track. I stay to myself and I love to listen to music . I work at KFC and enjoy my job. When I graduate I would like to attend NCCU or NC A&T so that I can work in the nursing field.

GAGE MEADE

My name is Gage Meade and I am a 17-year-old junior at Person High School. There is very little to say about me. I only have a few friends and tend to just focus on my schoolwork. I don’t have any big hopes or ambitions outside of living comfortably.

ANTONIO MOORE

I’m a first year and turned 15 not too long ago. I spend the majority of my life playing video games. I compete in tournaments and it’s a big part in my life. I also have a pretty interesting sense of humor. My biggest dream is for my books to become movies and I’m sure that journalism is the first step.

GENUINE MORRIS

I am a 17-year-old junior at Person High School where I play football and wrestle. This is my third year playing both sports. My goal this year is to focus on wrestling while keeping my grades up. Growing up, I was always competitive and like being a part of a team. I like to be better at things that seem hard to others in order to stand out from the crowd. In the future I see myself being successful, having a place of my own, my own car, and most importantly, a family of my own.

CORY MYERS

I’m 16-years old and have five tattoos. I work a lot and get no sleep at night. I love taking pictures, I like the beach and I love the outdoors.

I’m in JROTC and want to join the Marines as an infantry man when I get out of school. I love to listen to hip hop.

LAWRENCE OSHIER

I am a 15-year-old freshman who came to Person High School halfway through my first semester from Northern High School in Durham. I am not a talkative person but when people get to know me, they call me friendly. I like playing video games in my free time, though I don’t have a favorite one in particular. I also like to draw when I get the chance.

BRIANA QUEEN

I’m a junior at Person High School and I’m 16-years old. I love to cook, do hair and listen to music. I enjoy writing, probably way too much. Writing is just a way to escape reality. When you write you can write about anything in the world and nobody can tell you you’re wrong. I have a big family but I wouldn’t change them for anything. After high school, I plan on enlisting into the Reserves so that I can go to college and major in either nursing or pediatric work because I love kids.

SARAH SMITH

I came to Person High School last year from Southern Middle School. Sometimes, I feel as if I’m the only kid in the world that loves to write; I could write a sentence, a page and hey, maybe even a book. It just came to my attention that PHS had a journalism class and I’m so excited I’m in it. However, writing is not the only thing I love. Cosmetology is the most important interest in my life. In 11th and 12th grade I want to take cosmetology classes at Piemdont Community College. By the time I graduate, I will have my cosmetology license and go right into beauty and hair. After a few years of working for someone’s salon I want to get my business degree and eventually open my own salon.

CAMERON SOLOMON

I’m a 6-2 junior at Person HIgh School. I am a typical kid who is laid back that loves to hang out with friends and play basketball. After I graduate from high school, I would like to continue to work at MasTec and go to lineman school. I love to make people laugh. I am hoping this journalism class will improve my writing and social skills farther than they are.

CHRISTEN STEWART

This is my second time taking journalism. I guess you could say that I couldn’t get enough of all the typing, writing and interviewing. This is my senior year of high school, so why not take my favorite class both semesters my last year? It has been a good, long four years at Person, but I am excited to see what my future has in store for me. I would definitely recommend this class for up-andcoming freshmen. It’s not the easiest class by far, but it’s fun and an awesome learning experience.

CELISA TERRELL

I am 16 years old, soon to be 17. I’m in the 11th grade. My plan after graduation is to join either the Air Force or Army. I’ll be starting my basic training and pulling my weekends this summer, but while in the military I want to go to school for a business/management degree . I can see myself traveling the world and extending my education to many different levels.

DARIUS TURNER

I am a Person High School junior who is very social, even with people I have never met before. I am involved in sports yearround, including basketball, football and track. I am a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church where I am an active usher and member of the children’s choir. I am a hard-working student who hopes to attend Western Carolina University and work toward earning a master’s degree in finance. I look forward to being a member of the Rock page staff again this semester.

HUNTER WILLIAMS

Hi Person County. My name is Hunter Williams and I am a senior at Person High School and a member of the Rocket wrestling team. I am a fourth year Rock Page staff member in Mrs. Flowers’ class. I am hard-working and I never like to sit around and do nothing, so I’m very active. I have always loved to write and journalism is one of the few classes and professions where I can write about real and current things going on either in town or somewhere else in the world. I plan on attending either NC State or UNC Wilmington when I graduate this year. It will be sad when this class is over because this will be the last time I will be able to take journalism at PHS. This means I will make this a really great final semester and I can’t wait to see what this last year has in store for me.
