‘We were stating a fact, which needs to be brought to the public’s attention’

To the editor:

Recently your local Pregnancy Support Center (PSC) was given permission to display a sign and flags on Madison Boulevard in front of the Person County Law Enforcement Center (LEC) to promote Sanctity of Human Life (SOHL).

Within 24 hours PSC was told it must come down based on a single complaint, which claimed the display was making a political statement on county-owned property, which was not allowed.

We respectfully disagree with this interpretation, as we were stating a fact, which needs to be brought to the public’s attention.

Our purpose was to inform all Personians, especially teens and their parents, with this display. The display read, “In the last hour, 136 babies died from abortion.”

Along with the display were 68 pink flags and 68 blue flags — pink reading “Abortion Kills Babies;” blue reading “Jesus Forgives.”

Did you know that within five weeks after conception every organ system is already established and beginning to develop?

At this age, the first signs of brain development are evident, and the ribs, vertebrae and muscles begin to form.

The developing lungs are evident and the heart, about the size of a poppy seed, is the first organ to function. The beating heart can be seen on ultrasound between six to eight weeks.

How can our knowledge make a difference for the unborn?

Furthermore, how can we help any woman who suffers in silence from a past abortion?

How will people know about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), which can cause death/ sterility?

How will they know — according to the Centers for Disease Control — one in four teenage girls has an STD?

While our services are available to everyone, we are unapologetically a Christian organization.

We agree with the Psalmist’s description of the sanctity of human life: “For You formed my inward parts, You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:13-14)

We offer information to help educate women in crisis situations, including pregnancy, post-abortion healing, parenting skills, and a free ultrasound during the first six to eight weeks after conception upon completing a positive pregnancy test.

Will you take a stand and make a choice for life? Dr. Alveda King added her voice to the conversation.

“Abortion is the civil rights movement of our day,” King said. “My uncle Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’”

In closing, we say let the conversations begin so knowledge and healing can take place.

The SOHL display has been placed at the corner of Ridge Road and Carver Drive. Please drive by and check it out. The display will remain up for a couple more weeks.
