Rocket seniors ready to blast off

By Sabrina Jackson

Yes! It’s that time. Person High School (PHS) seniors are applying, committing, enrolling and preparing for college. Students have just received their caps, gowns and invitations. Graduation is right around the corner. June 14th will be here before you know it.

Students here at PHS have been working hard to stay on track and graduate. We are so proud of our students. As the class of 2014, test scores, including end of semester EOCs, MSLs and VoCATS, have been increasing.

Students’ school choices range all over North Carolina, with some students even going out of state.

The most common school choices are The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Shaw University, Campbell University, Bennett College, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, East Carolina University, Western Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, Piedmont Community College, and many more.

Many students who will be entering college in the 2014-2015 school year are first generation college students, meaning that they are the first in their family, or home, to go to college. We would like to take the time to acknowledge all of these students, both first generation and those who are not. There are also many choices among majors with our students. The most common major is nursing.

Here are some quotes from some very excited seniors….

“I am ready to start a new journey in my life,” said Cyerra Torain, who is on to do big things in her life.

“Knowledge is power" is a quote that inspires senior David Lamb as he goes through the school year and prepares for college.

“I am excited to start the next chapter of my life going to college, and I am so excited to graduate,” said Brandon Stephens.

“I am excited to graduate, go to college, and experience new things,” said Alyssa Carpenter.

“‘All the fun days are over, time for life to kick in’, I am more than thrilled to go to college, I’ve been waiting since toddler days,” said the excited Jeremy Smith.

As you can see, our seniors have the right mindset and are well on their way. Be prepared to see these students as your future doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers and lawyers.

While we mentioned seniors going to college, we want to also acknowledge the countless seniors who are going into service to protect our country. Much respect to all.
