Emma Bailey Hicks


BURLINGTON — Emma Bailey Hicks, 89, formerly of Roxboro, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at The Village of Brookwood.
Emma Bailey was born June 16, 1924 in Helena, the daughter of the late John Haywood and Lula Pierce Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William B. (Bill) Hicks, one grandson, Chris Stultz, three sisters, Polly J. Bateman, Evelyn J. Guffy and Mary J. Bradsher, and three brothers, Woodrow Jones, John Wesley Jones and Reginald Jones.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by three children and their spouses, Anne and Dwight Stultz of Martinsville, Va., Stuart and Katie Hicks of Charlotte and Susan Hicks of Raleigh. In addition she is survived by four sister-in-laws, Pearl H. Ferrell of Allensville, Elizabeth C. Hicks of Hurdle Mills, Marie Jones of Raleigh, and Peggy J. Powers of Henderson. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. There are numerous nieces and nephews as well.
Emma Bailey graduated in 1946 from the Watts School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for 38 years which included office nurse for Dr. E. M. Hedgepeth, school nurse, and Home Health Nurse for Person County.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington for eight years and formerly of Roxboro Baptist Church for 59 years where she served on many committees.
There will be a private graveside service.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 at Roxboro Baptist Church, 202 S. Main St., Roxboro, NC 27573. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. DuPre Sanders. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. at the church, one hour before the service.
