Book lovers found great deals during the bi-annual Friends of the Person County Library Spring Book Sale, held April 6-8 at the library.

About 30 people were waiting in line for the doors to open at 4 p.m. Thursday for the three-hour Preview Sale, which was open to Friends members only. Library Director Christy Bondy said the advance sale draws not just locals. Book dealers show up from across the state, pay the $15 Friends membership fee, and stock up on books which they will resell mostly online.

Bondy said there were about 50 people waiting for the book sale to open at 9 a.m. on Friday.

She said the overall book sale was a big success.

“We were fortunate to have Mama Crockett’s Donuts here as a new novelty,” she said, “as well as a fantastic membership drive, and raffle tickets.”

The sale typically raises about $1,500, she said. If people miss the sale, there is always an ongoing book sale at the front desk.

Most of the books come from donations, people cleaning out their bookshelves, with about 10 percent being library discards.

Paperbacks are sold for 50 cents each with hardbacks going for $1. On Saturday, customers can buy a box of books for $5.

Bondy said the book sale has been a fixture at the library for about 30 years, most likely originating with the formation of the Friends of the Library group in 1988.

The date for the October book sale has not been scheduled. It will be decided at the Friends of the Library Book board meeting in May.
