Try not to drink your calories; sweetened drinks, including sodas, teas and specialty coffee drinks, add calories that may not “register” and don’t help you eat less. When you are hungry between meals, have healthy snacks such as carrots and hummus, fruit and nuts readily available. Avoid sweets, which stimulate the reward center of the brain. They cause an internal war (e.g., “I’m only going to eat a little bite, but oh, I want more.”), and mustering up the willpower to resist can be exhausting. Reduce stress; it weakens the “stop-eating” signal.
